'Her recent paintings are responses to walking in the mountains of Norway or the coastline of Norfolk. These abstract paintings demonstrate three things, an acute concern for colour relationships, qualities of light and a sense of place. Abstraction allows her to suggest rather than depict. Her oil paintings have an extraordinary luminosity and depth of colour achieved through a gradual build-up of layers and glazes. The most recent work is the ‘Norwegian’ series. Last year she did a ‘hyttetur’, which is Norwegian for cabin tour, but it means more than just the literal translation. Rather it describes a particular type of journey, hiking from one cabin to another, collecting water from streams, heating the cabin, being self-sufficient far away from civilisation. It was profound and memorable, for Brenda the paintings have completed those experiences. A ‘Shoreline’ series has been developed from walking the Norfolk coastal path. Walking along a beach; most of us can’t resist picking up a pebble, stone, sandblasted piece of glass or flint'. Anthony Coe, Director, The John Russell Gallery, Ipswich
Over the last decade my paintings have been primarily concerned with the excitement of extracting observed colour and the balancing of spatial relationships. My working process involves the distillation of experience, perception and knowledge through reflection and memory – what remains is that which is significant. My non-figurative paintings are visual equivalents, they are not snapshots but an accumulation of perceptions and experience.
I have also created several site specific interventions and collaborative pieces of work in a variety of media (digital, sculpture, light).
My own practice and teaching always stimulated each other. I researched, designed, wrote and delivered all the courses I led including the Foundation degree in Arts and Wellbeing, the Access to HE diploma: Art and Design, Women in Art and Literature in the 19th Century and the Return to Art and Design course for mature students.
